Public Art Installations

My public art is inspired by and reactive to both the site and the people. I often spend weeks exploring the area, talking to residents, visiting local businesses, and pondering how to embrace the culture and interpret the need. My goal isn’t about installing “a David Franklin” in the community. It’s about tapping the voices of people who want to be heard and projecting their message through my work.

It’s also about teamwork. Since 2001, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with several renowned organizations on a variety of high-profile installations, including The Miller Hull Partnership [Kitsap County Administration building]; the Portland Regional Arts & Culture Council [Portland, Oregon’s Fire Station #21], and John Portman & Associates [the Port of San Diego]. Each project required carefully dovetailing my own artistic mission with overall project practicalities such as budget, site, process, and schedule – an experience I always find remarkably rewarding and inspiring.
