THE ONCE AND FOREVER LAKE MICHICAN

David Franklin

Commissioned by the John G. Shedd Aquarium

This sculpture is a reflection of the great history and dazzling abundance of Lake Michigan on whose shores the work was imagined, produced, and installed.  Evoking the movement and energy of species that have thrived in these lakes for eons-including lake trout, walleye, cisco, longnose gar, northern pike, and the mighty

lake sturgeon-this piece inspires us all to be mindful stewards of the Great Lakes, protecting their beauty and biodiversity for generations to come.

The fish were made in partnership with the Kohler Company from original woodcarvings by David Franklin. Each fish was slip cast from vitreous china by David, his wife Joanne, and their family, alongside the other tradespeople at Kohler. With special thanks to Aaron Whelton for collaborating on the digital design, Shari McWilliams for facilitating the production at Kohler Company, and to John Bueter for all his expertise.
