Masking Off the Original

October 7, 2012 by David

Beginning to mask off a wooden original with bench clay. You have to cover everything you don't want covered in the mold making plaster which is rigid and doesn't allow for undercuts.

Kohler Residency Begins

October 4, 2012 by David

As many of you know I was selected to be a resident artist at the Kohler Factory in Wisconsin earlier this year.  The program is called Arts/Industry and I was selected to work in the factory in my own studio space in the factory along side hard working people casting ceramic sinks, toilets, urinals and hospital ware.  I have full access to the factory and all of the facilities, supplies, and expertise available at the factory.  My residency began a little over a week ago.  I have been making plaster molds of some carvings to create a body of carved work in ceramics.  Here’s some images from my trip and my first week here which has been really an amazing experience so far.

Kohler Artist in Residence

September 7, 2012 by David

Eight months ago I applied and was accepted into the John Michael Kohler Arts/industry program at the Kohler factrory near Sheboygan WI.  In the program artists get to create a body of work in the factory using the same space and equipment as the workers use to make Kohler products.  I will be working in the Pottery casting some carvings in ceramic and then carving some of the work as it comes out of hue molds. Very exciting! Here’s a link to information about the John Michael Kohler Artist in Residence Program.

Watch the Emmy winning documentary “Poisoned” on Netflix now and see the food safety work @billmarler does for us all. Without him the Arm of the Kraken would have not emerged.
