Inspired by the 2009 Canoe Journey to Suquamish, this artwork honors the peoples of Salish Sea who are carrying their cultures in these traditional watercraft. The paddles, two kinds commonly used in these waters are held vertically in a salute to people entering the park. The gate panel represents a Salish canoe in a scene inspired by the view from the park. The scene is illustrated with motifs of the sea, mountains, and sky inspired by designs and structure of locally made traditional baskets.
